Users
Manage portal and notification users, and understand how resource access is granted in Altostrat.
Introduction
Altostrat manages access to resources through users and teams. Each user has a profile that determines their roles, notification preferences, and team membership.
Types of Users
Type | Can Log In | Receives Notifications | Own Resources |
---|---|---|---|
Portal User | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Notification User | No | Yes | No |
Portal User
- Has an Altostrat account with a username/password (or SSO).
- Can log in, view and manage resources, and receive notifications.
- A portal user can also own resources if they belong to a team that holds resources.
Notification User
- Cannot log in to Altostrat.
- Receives alerts (e.g., SLA breaches, network outages).
- Ideal for stakeholders who only need updates but don’t manage devices.
Creating a User
There are two ways to create a user in Altostrat:
- User Self-Registration
- The person goes to https://auth.altostrat.app and signs up.
- Once verified, they can join or create a team in your organization.
- See User Registration.
- Portal Admin Creates a User
- An existing portal admin with the right Roles & Permissions can manually create a new user.
- This user can be assigned as either a Portal User or a Notification User.
Granting Someone Access to Your Resources
Because all resources are owned by a team, you must add the user to the relevant team.
- Open Teams Go to Settings → Teams and select the team that owns the resources.
- Invite or Add User Use the Invite or Add Member button.
- Assign a Role The role (with specific permissions) defines what this user can do within the team.
If the user doesn’t appear in the user list, make sure you have privileges to add new users and that the user has already registered or has been created as a new portal user by an admin.
User Management Tasks
Updating User Details
- Navigate to Users From the Settings or Team page, locate the user.
- Edit Profile Update attributes like email, display name, or phone number for notifications.
- Roles & Permissions If you have the correct role, you can alter the user’s assigned role.
Deleting or Disabling a User
If a user no longer requires access or notifications:
- Locate the User Under Settings → Users (or in a specific Team).
- Delete or Disable Confirm the action. If they have owned resources, you may need to reassign ownership first.
Email & Phone Verification
To enhance security, Altostrat supports verification processes:
- Email Verification: Required for portal logins.
- Phone Verification: Can be used for SMS notifications. Must be in Supported SMS Regions.
Best Practices
- Keep Team Membership Updated to ensure proper resource access.
- Use Different Roles to enforce the principle of least privilege.
- Regularly Audit users in your organization to ensure no unnecessary active accounts linger.
With a clear user strategy—combining portal and notification accounts, plus proper team membership—you’ll maintain a secure and efficient environment for everyone using Altostrat.
